Yet anthropologically, ethologically and historically the nuclear family in itself does not appear to be a satisfactory child-rearingunit. The earliest emotional base for a child’s growth is not the only one necessary for maturation. Anthropologists4have even argued that the nuclear family is not the basic and elementary social unit of mankind.
Our method of study was to assess the quality and intensity of exchangestaking place outside the family, taking the term in its narrowest meaning. We have found that for African and mixed couples, although the influence of class is still pertinent, it is much less so than for the French families. It is so much attenuated that the child-rearing unit is never dominant. Both wife and husband give most of their available time to community activities, whether para-professional, leisure, cultural, sport, political or religious.
Of course a society's internal evolutionmodifies it without the action of external forces,but the processes are slower and more difficultto grasp.
