We were ordered out of the ship to take shelter on the pier where best we could. I remember at the time, the strange things that men do under stress, where some men had crawled under a tarpaulin. What shelter they expected to find there, Heaven knows! Others gathered together in groups under the framework of cranes, quite out in the open. But I made a beeline with several other fellows, much older than me of course – probably men among them who had been under fire themselves in the First War – and there used to be in those days almost opposite to where the ship was loading, a little tea shack for the use of the dockers.
