Politeness and consideration for others must be emphasized if necessary. As skill with the eating utensils increases, the place mat protecting the table cloth at his place is removed, and the change brought to the notice of the patient. Gradually fewer allowances should be made for him, and his place at the table will come to look no different than that of others. It may seem to the patient that he will never be able to dress himself again. He can be started in this direction, however, quite early.

Watch his feet to be sure they do not become tangled and throw you both down. Soon you can take him for short walks outside the house. Caution others to stay away from the patient's paralyzed side while he is walking. Their attempted assistance on that side makes it impossible for the patient to walk by himself, as they are in the way. When you feel the patient is beginning to use your arm less for support and more for balance, it is wise to substitute a crutch or a cane. It might be well to try the cane first, and if he finds it impossible to walk with that, let him use the crutch, as it gives a little more support.

For him, the present is the only time that exists. Even his condition may not seem to bother the patient very much. Then gradually a change comes. As he is confronted with more and more situations with which he cannot cope, he retreats and adapts until he acts like an entirely diHerent person. Certain personality characteristics appear to be common to many patients who have had a stroke, particularly if loss of speech is part of the disability. The most noticeable of these is complete self-centeredness.
