Poland was an honorary ally in the struggle against fascism, and its liberal and conservative groups were untainted with any hint of collaboration. This resulted in serious differences within the Communist Party when it came to how best to deal with the traditional parties.

In particular it was able to cement its alliance with the socialists, for in December 1945 the socialists had decided to put up separate candidates in any future elections, but after an intense campaign in the trade unions and local party cells the communists were able to get this decision reversed. When the Socialist Party held its Congress in March 1946 it not only decided to put forward a joint list of candidates with the other National Democratic Front parties, but voted by a large majority for a merger with the Communist Party.
